What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis has long been associated with the strange and mysterious, thanks to sideshows  making people believe they are invisible or eating a delicious apple when in fact they are eating an onion.

In fact hypnosis is a very natural state, which you have experienced thousands of times, but you probably didn’t notice. It is a natural state for humans as well as animals. It is similar to when we watch television, read a book, listen to music, drive our cars and many more every day occurrences.

Everything that we have learned is stored in our subconscious and is accountable for the seat of our learnings, past experiences and our memories. It comprises a large amount of our behaviour. It is said that our mind can be likened to an iceberg. One-eighth of the iceberg is above water (our conscious mind) and seven-eighths are below water (our unconscious mind). It is the controlling portion (7/8) that is responsible for the blueprint of our behaviours, thoughts, beliefs and attitudes. Therefore changes made in the unconscious mind are more potent and lasting.  In fact if we had to consciously think about everything we did, we probably wouldn’t be able to leave the house in the morning, as all our time would be taken up with decisions!

We have a conscious and an unconscious or subconscious mind split. Our conscious mind can only deal with between 7-9 things at any one time, whereas our unconscious can deal with an indefinite amount of information.
